- MISSING CHILDREN DIRECTORY GOES ONLINE
-
-
- SCHENECTADY, NY - Computer Users for Social Responsibility, Inc. (CUSR),
- jointly announed today with Child Find of America, Inc., the publication of the
- first electronic edition of the Missing Children Directory.
-
- This edition of the Missing Children Directory is a computer based interactive
- program which allows the user of a personal computer to search or scan a
- database of missing children, and is easily updated. This edition works on
- Apple Macintosh computers using Hypercard, an Apple software program, and a
- version for Apple II and PC compatibles will be available shortly.
-
- The Hypercard edition for Apple Macintosh computers allows the user to search
- using criteria such as name, date of birth, date of disappearance, state, sex,
- eye color, and race.
-
- All versions of the directory will be placed on computer bulletin boards,
- commercial online services (America Online, Compuserve, Genie, and others), and
- global computer networks. There is a potential reach of 40 million people in
- over 40 countries, according to Don Rittner, President of CUSR and creator of
- the electronic Hypercard edition. Additionally, the directory will be sent to
- schools and public libraries around the country through the distribution aid of
- Apple computer user groups nationwide.
-
- Since many of these children are in school or frequent libraries, it is hoped
- that many will be found by teachers, fellow students, and librarians, who will
- regularly scan the directory. Each missing child's information card or the
- entire directory can be printed from a Laserwriter or dot matrix printer.
-
- CUSR will also fund and create a computer bulletin board system (BBS) for Child
- Find so that they will have 24 hour access to communications with law
- enforcement agencies, parents, and other interested parties, who may access the
- BBS through their own personal computers. FirstClass, a bulletin board
- software program is being donated by SoftArc, Inc., a Canadian software
- developer. Moreover, Child Find will update the Missing Children Directory and
- make the updates available through their BBS and various online services. The
- whole process saves thousands of dollars on printing costs but has the added
- benefit of reaching millions of people instantly. In the case of abductions,
- this could prove to be a life saver.
-
- "Not only is this is an innovative way to reach millions of people who may be
- able to find these missing children," Rittner said, "but it is a great example
- of how computer technology can be utilized for socially responsible programs.
- Child Find will be able to respond to missing children alerts instantly through
- electronic communications, 24 hours a day, by way of their bulletin board
- system."
-
- CUSR is also negotiating with a major online service to host a Child Find Forum
- online which will act as an educational and distribution center on the issue of
- missing children. More than 75 million Americans own a personal computer and
- 25% of those have access to a modem which allows them to engage in online
- communcations, Rittner said.
-
- CUSR is a two year old, non profit, organization dedicated to promoting the
- wise use of personal computers for the common good.
